The leaking roof saga on our new Autosleepers Broadway EB 2019 model

The 'saga' may have been resolved thanks to our dealership. If you have been following our blog, then you will recall that on our first proper trip away in Bryony, we suffered a leak in the rear corner of the motorhome. Water found its way down into the wardrobe and its roof and side walls became damp! You can read about it here: https://wherenexthun.blogspot.com/2020/12/how-good-is-your-motorhome-dealership.html

After a phone call to our dealer and a quick ‘emergency’ trip to their nearest branch, a temporary fix was made to the leaking area. We then immediately went in to lock down 2, having to cut short our South Coast tour. Poor Bryony sat on her storage site for a month without us being able to access her and we remained at home worrying about the temporary fix and whether it had held during some awful late autumnal weather.

Well good news. The temporary fix held.

This week, the moment the lock down was lifted, we took her up to our normal dealership where they did a four-hour inspection of the roof and the interior cupboards. They put huge heaters on in the habitation unit to dry things out thoroughly (although we have to say that when we entered her for the first time after four weeks, we couldn’t smell or find any traces of damp – the temporary repair had held well). The leak site had been found in the roof, a slight split in the base of the aerial socket area. This was cleaned, repaired and resealed properly.

On our return from a day trip to Exmouth sea front ( https://wherenexthun.blogspot.com/2020/12/making-break-for-it-in-autosleepers.html ) the upright front piece of the cupboard started to come away from the motorhome side wall, a gap of 2mm suddenly appearing where no gap had previously been. We also find that some of the draws in the base are sticking slightly and don’t close properly.

The dealership maintenance team sorted out the draws. The decision has been made not to strip out all the bathroom interior for now. Rather we wait and see how things go for the next few months. Everything has been logged and any further work will be done under warranty but in discussion we have all reached the consensus view that it is better to leave things settle and see what happens. Let’s not tempt fate and create more problems for ourselves by removing an entire bathroom. All being well, the roof resealing, aerial fixing and drying out with heaters have fixed all issues! We can live with the gap, if and we say if, it doesn't get any bigger.

We cannot begin to describe how relieved we are. The team haven’t found any evidence of damp collecting elsewhere. Damp meter tests have shown no damp. There is no evidence of delamination of interior timbers.  Phew! We will now monitor the wardrobe damp levels and the gap between wall and wardrobe front. If there are any changes, we will add them as a postscript here.

We are not sure whether we will escape for some overnight touring in the next few weeks. We will be doing some extended day trips in Bryony though over the Christmas period, tier restrictions permitting. If you are out and about in your motorhome, take care, stay safe out there and enjoy your motorhoming. If you have a chance and the inclination, share a postcard with us
