October 15th day forty-nine

We are turning north and slowly heading homewards. Today we drove up through part of the Dordogne area. Here the scenery is stunning. Creamy coloured limestone buildings and walnut plantations everywhere. Soils are redder, limestone cliffs more vertical, floodplains more fertile. Throw in narrow roads, forests and rolling farmland. Beautiful!

Domme was a no go. No parking and no access up to the bastille town high up the hill; so we stopped further on at la Roche Garac and wandered the river bank, walked the cliff terraces with their cliff dwellings and grabbed a coffee in a little café just off the main road.

We could have taken a boat trip but the wooden boats made to look like medieval boats of old were just too touristy for us. Our next stop, the troglodyte medieval cliff city, la Roche at Christopher was aaaamazzzing, as Craig on strictly would say. Fascinating. Plenty of Moho parking space by the way. There are several levels to explore along the cliff line. Wooden replicas of cranes, winches and capstans from medieval times along with videos and detailed display boards in English, give unique insights into this former community. It is well worth visiting but don't trust a sat nav!  It won't get you here and don't trust Google maps either as that takes you into a field across the river on the other side of the floodplain! Go on, ask us how we know that!

We finish the day by stopping at Montignac.  7 euros gets us a nice level site but next to a noisy road. Its a five-minute walk into a nice little town with cafes selling artesian pastries.

And what of the walnuts at the previous site last night, I hear you ask? Of course, I collected some. They kept dropping onto the Moho roof all night and kept us awake!
