October 17th day fifty-one
A visit to the maritime museum. Did I marry a good tolerant
woman or did I marry…never mind. Mag dutifully tags along, poor soul! In
fairness to the museum, it houses a good little collection of model boats. The large
model training ships are amazing in their detail and construction. Absolute
scale replicas built to help train French naval officers of that time.
We call in at Hermonie’s base tent and find a fascinating
display about her construction (well I found it fascinating, others found it
less so!!).
The Corderie is the star of the museum complex, well worth a visit. One of the best opening audio-visual presentations I have seen in a museum, bettered only by the one at The Box Museum in Plymouth back in the UK. Anyway, the Corderie is, as you might have guessed, all about making ropes for the grand old ships of the line from Nelson’s days! Battle of Trafalgar and all that! The museums resident rope worker is a master craftsman; truly a master craftsman. His ropework is exquisite and done right in front of you. He produces lots for boats, barges etc.
Back in the town centre, which by the way is really nice, we stop off at the central square in a café to have Croque Monsieur and omelettes whilst watching the world stroll by. A lazy afternoon people watching. Great stuff.
