Is Malaga worth visiting in your motorhome?
We are alive. We survived 65 mph winds and 12’ high crashing
waves on the beach ahead of us. It was, to say the least, a rough old night and
as usual, Maggie slept through it all! Matey boy here was up most of the night! Nothing changes 😄
I go out and inspect poor Bryony. Several other
motorhome owners are out early doing the same thing. She’s intact, her paint is
still on her front bonnet. I was expecting to see bare metal! The windscreen is
….. sandy! The front skylight is …..
sandy! She is going to take so much cleaning!
We miss the first bus – it has been cancelled. Buses are a
little hit and miss (we learned later that the day before many had been
cancelled for fear of palm trees falling on top of them – so many buses weren’t
in the place they should have been overnight).
We chat to a Dutch couple also waiting for the bus and
thirty minutes later another one turns up – you need 160 or 163 to go into
Malaga and it’s a 3minute journey or so along the sea front.
The winds have dropped to a breeze. The sun is shining. Its
17C and a Saturday. Housebound the last two days, everyone and their dog and
ferret have decided to come to Malaga. It is heaving! There are no tickets for
the Picasso Museum. Sold out – lesson learned – book your tickets way in
advance of your arrival, on-line. There are queues for the cathedral. Narrow
shopping streets are busy!
We escape to the market and then find a café for coffee and
toasted Croissants with jam – tastier than it sounds!
We wander the streets souvenir hunting for the kids; we
admire the roman theatre, climb the fort viewpoint and head for the waterfront.
Another coffee to the sound track of a superb Spanish guitar
busker. She is great and draws an appreciative crowd.
It’s too busy – we catch the bus back to the site and spend
the afternoon chilling in chairs outside between the vans. Its sheltered and
the sun is warm and the waves have died down somewhat!
So, is Malaga worth visiting?
Yes, absolutely, if these sites are anything to go by – but
today it defeated us! Lots of Dutch and Germans come here to overwinter and
never seem to get bored with the city! Founded over two millennia ago, it is
one of the oldest Mediterranean sea ports – roman theatres, Moorish castles,
Phoenician lighthouses, medieval Alcazaba, baroque cathedral.
So, what had we hoped to do? The Picasso Museum and the
castle. The roman theatre and the cathedral. But then there was also – the
hidden plazas and the little streets of boutique craft shops, the botanical
gardens and the carmen Thyssen museum. What about the fine arts museum, the
archaeology museum and the basilicas? So
much to see and do and we failed – miserably. Malaga will be on our itinerary
next time we return to southern Spain!
