October 14th day forty-eight
A dentist phones just after 9 am with a cancellation slot.
They are 2 km up road. Can I be there in ten minutes? We pack Bryony up
superfast and arrive just in time. Thirty painless minutes later my crown is repaired
and refitted. A superb, kind, caring service by a non-English speaking dentist,
all done through Google Translate. Cost? 30 euros. I checked with her assistant
twice – but no it was just 30 euros. Wow!
A second stroke of luck. The petrol station opposite the
dentist had just received deliveries whilst I was inside and we can now have 50
euros of Gazole which tops up the tank to full. We also stock up at the Intermache
next door. Turning out to be a good morning!
We decide to depart and head for Cahors. The Aire is full
and the recommended car park even fuller because half of it has been roped off
for a travelling fair to base camp over the winter months. Only six mohos are
in there and the car park has a distinctly dodgy air to it; and no it has
nothing to do with the travelling fair. It just doesn’t feel safe! And so, we trust
out gut instincts and leave. Pity because Cahors looks wonderful.
Six miles down the road on a free access camping car site in
the middle of nowhere literally, we come to rest, under walnut trees. Walnuts
just carpet the floor. Our footsteps have a crunching soundscape every time we
step down from the van. Our semi tame squirrels back home love walnuts. Getting
a ‘bag for life’ full of walnuts through customs will be an impossibility. We
could gather enough off the floor to last right through winter for them. It's
tragic and a waste. We want to almost cry!
Its good to stop. The hang over from covid still lingers - wooziness,
headaches, aching under arms and occasional general lethargy. After driving, my
leg and back are painful. We are clearly falling apart. Good job we each have a
sense of humour.
Sat in Bryony, recuperating, we look out over a ploughed field. Behind us, a groundsman is cutting the local football pitch grass on the smallest ‘ride on’ grass cutting tractor I have ever seen. We have been here forty minutes now and he is only a third done. Its hilarious to watch.
