We drive south to the Camargue. Taught it as a case study way back in the mid 1980’s. Always wanted to go there. We are heading for Saintes Maries de La Mer. Having been fairly busy we opt for a day relaxing at the campsite on arrival. It’s the first time we have wound out the awning and used the permeable groundsheet. Our campsite, ‘Camping de la Brise’, is big but as it is coming to the end of the season, there are plenty of spaces. We have a pitch which is nicely screened by low hedges next to the central campsite road. EHU close by and a water point about 20 metres away. Toilet facilities within 100 metres. Great swimming pool area – lovely. A 100 metre walk down to the beach – long, wide, golden sand and very clean. Easy access into town. The only drawback to our pitch? Very dusty and sandy! And rock-hard ground which bend awning pegs instantly!
Night time and we discover the third drawback. It is plagued
by mosquitos and these are biggies! So, no stopping outside as dusk falls – we
are driven back into the motorhome. And yes, they went after me not Mag!
Apparently its to do with smell. Some of us smell more attractive to mosquitos
than others. Scientific fact apparently! At least we got the answer to what the
large white lighthouse looking objects were – as dusk fell, they switched on a
bright neon blue – giant mossie zappers! Go figure!
