The Michelin Museum at Clermont Ferrand appeals to us so continuing down the A71 that is where we decide to head today. Good call! What an amazing, interesting museum. Yes, it was fascinating about the history of car tyres – not a sentence I ever thought I’d write but there we go – but it was also so much more. The history of Michelin maps and guides; fantastic old clips of film about rubber tapping and tyre making. The history of Michelin factories worldwide. A carbon fibre E formula One car – amazing! A biplane, a large railbus. If you are passing down this way, we recommend a stop off. There is a small car park without height restrictions alongside. If you have anything bigger than 6.5m in length, get there early to get the corner spaces!
The afternoon is spent over at Le Puy de Dome. Up on the rack railway to the top of the volcanic peak. Excellent views across the old volcanic cones scattered across this part of France. Great little train ride. Plenty of parking at base. Don’t bother if it is cloudy and misty.
