Down into St Mawes car park just up from harbour by 0850. Parking is tight for bigger motorhomes ... they use a herringbone grid pattern and Land Rovers can barely reverse out of a bay. Up the top end are a few bays against walls where you could squeeze in but not if you have bike racks on and are over 6.5m. We grab the only bay with a yellow hatched area behind for the bike rack to overhang. Saves us having to pay for two spaces. £6.00 for all day
Our first coffee stop is on the harbour quayside. Quite
unsatisfactory. We have a builder’s truck alongside and the young lad is being very
noisy with a small caterpillared dumpy truck thingy. Diagonally across the bay
from us, the Idle Rock Hotel has a stunning terrace and as we later find out, exemplary
service ..... expensive lattes but so worth it 😁
Pure indulgence .... read a paper, stunning views, away
from the hoy paloy ..... we were born to this but we’ve only just realised it.
Along the road back out of town, is a pretty little shingle
beach with large concrete steps to sit and lie out on and a simply divine view
across the harbour. Positively Mediterranean. Thus, my first non-wet suited dip
in the British sea in a decade happens. The water temperature is a balmy 18.5c .....
a guy measured it with a garden thermometer probe before he went in ....... no honestly,
we watched him walk down to the water’s edge to check the temp for his young
sons before they went in! Thirty odd
years living in the south west and never ever have we seen that before ...... he
was from Richmond .... which of course explains it ..... probably a Bentley
driver, say no more 🙄
I spend a delicious few minutes wondering whether his butler
will bring a kettle of boiling water down to take the chill off ... sadly not .....
I’m very disappointed.
After a few hours lazing on the beach we walk along the sea
front, back past the harbour up to the castle. Glad we bought those English
heritage memberships .... stunning views, interesting castle design ….. nice
ice creams. Cracking end to the afternoon.
Back at Trewince farm, Bryony is tided and then we sit in
the sun; I’m sorting out the astronomy gear after last night’s extended
session. I’m listening to ‘Any Questions’ on R4 in which dear old Jacob
Rees-Mogg is getting his ‘backside’ handed back to him by the good townsfolk of
Bridport. A Tory heartland I believe, but seemingly not for much longer.
‘Hostile’ doesn’t describe adequately their reaction to him.
An excellent end to an excellent day.
