Day 7 Open Air museum and one of my favourite programmes
If yesterday was fascinating, so has today been. We are at the Weald Down Open Air Museum, a time machine like trip back to an agricultural way of life from the mid 1400’s. Houses, shops, farm wagons, tools of an age. To see restored genuine medieval houses from the mid 1400’s is extraordinary, especially if you are a closeted history teacher! Ssh! In the words of Hagrid “I probably shouldn’t have told you that”. Number one son turned to the dark side (history) and it would make his day if he thought his father secretly had ‘dark force’ leanings as well!
Below are some of the buildings and artefacts they have managed to conserve:
It has been like stepping out of the Tardis into a previous
time. The bonus? This museum is also home to ‘The Repair Shop’ - a BBC programme in which talented
conservationists and crafts people repair and restore peoples treasured but
dilapidated possessions, whether they be toy cars, old football caps, rocking
horses or extraordinary clocks. You can find out more about the programme here.
A great watch - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08l581p
We would recommend without reservation a visit here to this
museum. You can find out more at www.wealddown.co.uk
To top off a lovely day we end up grabbing fish and chips for tea down at East Wittering. Perfect!
