Day three

The storm has blown itself out. The waves have subsided. The aquamarine colour has returned. White horses are scarce. We can even see Lundy far away in the distance along with the north Cornwall and north Devon coast. We wake to a wonderful sunrise.

We offload the bikes and head down into town and out along the main road towards Hayle. At Longstone, we take a side road down to the little church in Lelant before following the coastal road alongside the railway over to the Saltings. Here I hit my 3000th mile on my E bike. Three thousand miles in nearly three years, not bad, not bad at all. Joining the B3301, we head into Hayle and end up at, yes you’ve guessed it, the little ‘Riviera’ cafĂ©. A summerhouse shed, nicely decorated inside.

Refreshed and back on the bikes we follow NCN route 3 over the hills southwards, through St Erth and Gwallon, down to one of our favourite places, Marazion.

The tide is out and the views of St Michael’s Mount are stunning. The causeway is high and dry and we take the opportunity to cycle across it. First time we have ever been able to do it, despite living down in the West Country for over thirty years.

Cheese scones and cinnamon buns from a local bakery are devoured down at the little harbour and then its back on the bikes for the return journey.  With a northerly head wind, it’s a chilly ride back made easier by the E bikes!

It has been a great little three-day escape and we feel we have ended the festivities ‘overindulgence’.

Total bike journey distance: 26 miles.
