We are cycling into Warminster, down the back of Centre Parcs. Centre Parcs always makes us laugh. We used to take the kids there when they were young and we have had many a good holiday there with family and friends. It is a bit of a bubble though – terribly middle class – fenced in – a bubble of exclusiveness!
The
cycle ride has thus far been eventful. Out of the CAMC site you have to cycle
back down the approach road and then take the turning into Longleat and down to
the payment booths.
Here you
are given strict instructions “Don’t go through the large gates otherwise you
will be eaten” says the booth lady. She points us in the direction of a back
road which we take. But even then, we have a slight panic when we suddenly find
ourselves along low barbed wire fence which says ‘Dangerous animals’’. One of
the grey rocks moves and morphs into a sleeping hippo! Turbo speed on E Bikes –
what a wonderful invention.
The hill out of Longleat affords stupendous views of the House but is long, even on an E Bike. The road down to Warminster and then through the woodlands is a great downhill route which makes up for the previous slogging climb.
Route
cycled:
national cycle route 24 to Warminster – retrace route out of Warminster and
turn left to Crockerton – pass Shear Water Lake – follow lanes through to
Horningsham – at pub pick up route 25 back to Longleat House pick up route 24
back around to CAMC site
Distance
cycled: 19
miles
