Moving northwards

The original idea was to park up overnight at one of the Elan Valley car parks for stargazing but given the state of the weather that’s now pointless. I never seem to get any luck with this stargazing malarkey. So, we change our plans. That is the great beauty of motorhoming isn’t it? I can’t say we have quite arrived at this ‘spontaneous’ lifestyle and sudden change of plans but we are slowly getting there.

From Ross we drive to Brecon via the A40, where we stroll through the town to…yes you guessed it …. a little favourite coffee shop of ours … for Lattes, cake and the newspapers. Have I said before there are some expensive habits we need to break?

Brecon has canal walks and cycle routes, an interesting museum, some lovely architecture and a variety of local shops and cafes as well as a small theatre

Then via Builth Wells along the A470 and A483 to Llandrindod Wells, stopping every so often to admire the views across rolling hills and deep valleys.

At Llandrindod, we park up at the lake, right next to the Café and toilets. This was our ‘emergency’ option, had we not liked the Elan Valley. Powys allows you to park for free overnight in their car parks; how enlightened!

Wish other counties would do the same. However, this morning, when we decided not to visit the Elan valley, we booked ourselves into Churchdown Farm, up the road near Crossgates. As we walk around the lake and back to the car park, we regret that decision. This would have been a perfect overnight stop, our first true ‘off grid’ experience. We learn a lesson today; be more adventurous!  The Lake café car park is a pleasant site with great views across the lake, on a quiet road and with a green area behind where you can find picnic tables. The café toilets are available overnight and are very clean.

That isn’t to say we are disappointed with Church house Farm when we eventually arrive there. A gravel pitch, clean facilities, EHU, all for £16. A great stargazing site is this; a large field with big open sky vistas. Shame about the low persistent cloud!
